Lions cancel practice in response to Jacob Blake shooting

Jacob Blake, Lions

According to multiple outlets, the Detroit Lions have decided to cancel practice on Tuesday in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Twitter, the Lions’ players decided to cancel practice.

That does not mean the players went home though. According to Chris Burke of “The Athletic” on Twitter, the entire team went out of the facility to give a message and to address the media together.

Kyle Meinke of MLive also went to Twitter. He had a quote from Lions safety Duron Harmon on Blake’s shooting.

Like many others, Harmon and the rest of his teammates seem fed up with the injustices happening around the world. A team-wide “lockout” of sorts is definitely going to get attention and help them push their message across.

We have already seen a lot of athletes bring light to this situation. So it is not a very big surprise to see more speaking out.

However, it is not often that you see an entire team in unison like this. The Lions taking it to this extent shows that they are serious and united about this situation.

Social and civil injustices have always been something that the sports world has tried to tackle. Recently, it has been much much more prevalent with everything happening in the world right now.

Detroit took a stand and made their message clear. It will be interesting to see what the aftermath of this is.

Will the team cancel any more practices in the future? Will there be any other teams following in their footsteps and canceling practices?

Right now, that is unknown. And it is unknown how this will be digested by the media and the fans. For now though, we do know that the Lions have made their stance known – and they are a united front on that.
