Matthew Stafford will miss his third straight game for the Detroit Lions in Week 12 against the Washington Redskins. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Detroit has discussed “shutting down” Stafford for the rest of the season.

The Lions' franchise quarterback has been dealing with a back injury that has prevented him from practicing for nearly a month. The injury is severe enough that doctors believe it will take at least six weeks to recover.

Despite the given timetable, Stafford is insisting that the team let him play again this season. But with Detroit seemingly out of the playoff race, the best decision may be to allow their quarterback to recover from his injury.

Before Stafford began missing games in Week 10, the veteran signal-caller had started in 136 consecutive games. That was the second-most among active quarterbacks, only behind Philip Rivers of the Los Angeles Chargers.

In his eight starts in 2019, Stafford had thrown for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The gunslinging quarterback was on pace to finish his 11th season with 4,998 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

As a matter of fact, Stafford was on track to finish as the NFL's leading passer in yards for the first time in his career. Unfortunately, his back injury will prevent him from reaching that milestone.

While Stafford continues to miss time, Jeff Driskel will draw another start under center on Sunday versus the Redskins. At this moment, it's likely we see Driskel be the starter once again on Thanksgiving. But Stafford will undoubtedly do everything he can to play again this year.
