The Detroit Lions are making tons of waves recently by making some surprising cuts. When it comes down to it, they have a plan to retool the defense via free agency, and they need to clear up some cap space.

One of the names that is heavily linked to the Lions is linebacker Anthony Barr.

In fact, per Connor Hughes, Detroit is considered a favorite to land him.

The Lions have gotten plenty of looks at Barr, who has been playing for division rival Minnesota Vikings. It seems as though his former team is not out of the running either.

Barr was in peak form in 2015, but has not seen that kind of production since. Regardless, he is still a four-time Pro Bowl, all in consecutive years. And he has still been a very solid player.

It seems the Lions will be looking to upgrade at almost every defensive position. They are losing Ziggy Ansah and have cut Nevin Lawson. Those are two pretty significant losses to cover. Barr is a good player, but may not fill an immediate need, which is where the price may come into play. Common thought is that the Lions will cover the edge rushing need in the draft.

That being said, the team has cleared a ton of cap space to have the flexibility to sign top talent and multiple positions. All it takes is Teez Tabor stepping up to make cutting Lawson a little better, but they still could venture out in free agency.

Barr makes the defense better, and that is the point.

As it stands right now he might be trading his Purple and Gold for Honolulu Blue and Silver.
