The Detroit Lions on Friday released their safety Glover Quin after six seasons with the team, as well as wideout Bruce Ellington and linebacker Nicholas Grigsby. Quin had signed with the Lions five years ago on a $23.5 million deal. He also received a two-year extension back in 2014 worth around $9.5 million guaranteed.

The Lions let him go because they save about $6.25 million in cap space by dumping his contract to waivers. At the same time, they're only taking a hit of $1.67 million in dead money.

Lions GM Bob Quinn said in a statement:

“We thank Glover for his countless contributions to the Detroit Lions during his six seasons with our team. Since joining the organization in 2013, Glover exemplified everything it means to be a true professional in this league — as both a competitor on the field and a leading voice in the community. Coach (Matt) Patricia and I have the utmost respect for him as a man and player, and we wish him nothing but the very best in the future.”

It's not a huge surprise that the team is moving on from Quin. As he's gotten older, he's become less effective as he's aged. The 33-year-old is consistently healthy though. He's started all 96 regular season games during his time in Detroit. However, this past season his ability at safety dropped off the table. Last season for the Lions, he had 74 tackles, no interceptions, and only three pass deflections.

The Lions went 6-10 and finished last in the NFC North Division.
