After incumbent second-string quarterback Tom Savage left the preseason opener on Thursday night, the Detroit Lions are working out a pair of quarterbacks. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, via Twitter, the Lions will bring in Josh Johnson and Landry Jones tomorrow. The only healthy backup to Matthew Stafford is David Fales.

Johnson, the former No. 1 pick of the AAF “quarterback draft,” is a 33-year-old career backup. He's had stints — some multiple — with all of the teams below:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • San Francisco 49ers
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • New York Jets
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Baltimore Ravens
  • New York Giants
  • Houston Texans
  • Oakland Raiders
  • Washington Redskins

He also played in the United Football League in 2012, for the Sacramento Mountain Lions. In 2018, Johnson played with the Redskins as an emergency backup signing. He played four games with the team, started three, and recorded a total of 590 passing yards (57.1% completion rate), three touchdowns, and four interceptions. He also added 120 yards and a touchdown on the season.

As for Jones, he's spent considerably less time traveling between teams and leagues. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted the former Oklahoma Sooner in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Jones spent his time in Pittsburgh as a backup to Ben Roethlisberger. He wound up playing 19 games, started five, in the span of five seasons. His record as a starter stands at 3-2. For his career, Jones has 1,310 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions on a 63.9 completion percentage clip to his name.

After Pittsburgh, Jones had a two-week stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018. Pre-draft, the Oakland Raiders signed him and cut him in late May.
