The Detroit Lions began their 2019 season with a preseason bout versus the New England Patriots on Thursday. Five plays in, their wide receiver Jermaine Kearse went down with an injury. Kearse was hit from behind by a defender while blocking.

A cart came out to pick up the 29-year-old. A trainer immediately covered his leg with an air cast being placed over.

The Lions signed Kearse on June 6th to compete with Danny Ammendola for a starting slot job. The receiver is known around the NFL for his circus catch against the Patriots in Super Bowl 49. He won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 against the Denver Broncos.

For his career, Kearse has recorded a total of 255 receptions for 3,290 yards and 17 touchdowns. He played his first five seasons with the Seahawks before being shipped off to the New York Jets for defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. In his first season, he tallied 65 receptions for 810 yards and five touchdowns. In his second, 37 catches for 371 yards and one touchdown.

Indications point to Kearse's injury potentially ruling him out for the season. Currently, the injury and the severity is unknown. Behind Kearse and the starters (Kenny Golladay, Danny Amendola, Marvin Jones Jr.), the Lions have Tommylee Lewis, Andy Jones, Brandon Powell, Chris Lacy, Tom Kennedy, Travis Fulgham, and Jonathan Duhart at the position.

Hopefully, Kearse's injury isn't too severe. The proven veteran has enjoyed a successful NFL career going undrafted out of Washington in 2012.

Preseason injuries are always the worst, and we wish him the best of luck in his return.
