The Detroit Lions used their second round pick (35th overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft to select running back D'Andre Swift. However, some were a little confused because the Lions already have Kerryon Johnson and Bo Scarbrough to handle the position.

Neither of those two backs are superstars, but both have tons of potential. And Johnson himself was a second-round pick in 2018. So there is clearly a lot the Lions like about him.

Johnson impressed in his rookie season, but took a step back in his sophomore campaign. So could he be feeling like the Lions lost some trust in him by selecting Swift?

According to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com, Johnson revealed what his initial reaction to the draft selection was.

“Johnson told reporters on a Wednesday conference call that he was finishing off the Harry Potter movie series when the Lions made former Georgia running back D'Andre Swift the 35th overall pick.

“Johnson said he wasn’t surprised by the development as he expected the Lions to add a back to a group that also includes Ty Johnson and Bo Scarborough and that he’s ‘excited' about sharing the backfield with a player he watched from the other side of the field in college. He called Swift ‘lightning in a bottle' as a big-play threat and thinks the two players can help each other improve.”

Johnson is looking forward to the addition. He seems to believe that he and Swift will be able to play off each other and the entire group will help each other improve.

Johnson certainly is not wrong, and the running back unit in Detroit could cause some problems for opponents. The next step is to see if they can live up to their potential.
