Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has been an iron man. He has played every game for the last eight years, and never missed practice. But head coach Matt Patricia decided that it was time for a break for his starting signal-caller.

Stafford missed almost missed a whole week of practice for the first time in eight years. Patricia explained his reasoning to Mlive.com, via Pro Football Focus.

“With everybody having a player day off yesterday, too, I think the big thing for me is just to get everybody going, just got to get moving after a player day off, but they’re still very active with their bodies. We call it active recovery, from that standpoint, that they’re doing something to flush out muscles and making sure they’re staying hydrated and stretching and all the rest of it. It’ll be good for everybody to get out there, including Matthew to get out there and just get running around and loosened up and get ready to go before we get on the plane. So just same for everybody today.” Patricia said.

This is a move that carries pretty much no risk. Stafford has proven himself to be a reliable quarterback throughout his career. This is pretty much standard procedure for veteran quarterbacks, and frankly it's shocking Stafford hasn't been rested before.

The former Georgia Bulldog is coming off of one of the worse years of his career but has a chance to turn things around with an improved roster.
