Not all players have loved their time with the Detroit Lions, but that isn't the case for Matthew Stafford, who recently opened up about his love for the team and the city. Stafford said at 18 he never thought he would be spending 11 years in the Motor City, but he is happy he has.

“I tell people this all the time but when I was 18, if you had told me I was gonna spend 11 years in Detroit, I’d have told you, ‘You’re crazy.” Stafford said via Lions Wire.

Stafford said that when he was drafted by the Lions, he never thought about the city and was focused on football, but as the years have gone on he has a fond appreciation for the city and its people.

“I never thought about the city and then I got drafted here and fell in love with it. I love being here. The people here have always been great to me. They’re a thirsty group of fans that just want us to win. I understand that and we’ve got to give that to them.”

For as much as the people have given to Stafford and the Lions, he has to feel the pressure to have success, and to have it soon. Stafford and Matt Patricia have a great relationship and he has really enjoyed working under him. Stafford is excited about the offense that they have this upcoming year and is expecting that maybe this is the year they can take that step forward.

“It’s been a lot of fun for me,” Stafford said with a smile. “It was honestly a fun challenge for me to learn a new offense. It’s something that I’ve really tried to spearhead.”
