The Detroit Lions could be without star quarterback Matthew Stafford in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Lions released this statement on the matter:

Stafford's wife, Kelly, put this message on Instagram:

Matthew Stafford actually went on the reserve/COVID-19 list back in August, though that was for a false positive test. This time around, Stafford is going on the list because he's “a high-risk, close contact” of a non-team member who tested positive, per ESPN. The Lions quarterback last had contact with this individual on Monday.

The Lions are 3-4 on the season. They lost to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8 at home by a final score of 41-21.

Stafford has thrown for 13 touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. He has racked up 1,916 yards through the air while completing 61.4 percent of his passes. Stafford's hand was bleeding near the end of the Colts game after he took a big hit.

The Lions will start Chase Daniel against the Vikings if Stafford it out. Daniel, 34, played for the Chicago Bears the last two seasons. He has seven career touchdowns and five picks in 65 games with the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles and Bears.

Detroit is in third place in the NFC North standings. The team trails the Green Bay Packers (5-2) and Bears (5-3). The Lions blew a huge lead to the Bears in Week 1 of the season at home.

Since getting drafted by the Lions with the first overall pick all the way back in 2009, Stafford has thrown for 42,941 yards and 269 touchdowns in the regular season. Hopefully, the gunslinger is able to make a quick recovery and join his teammates in Week 10 against the Washington Football Team if he can't play in Week 9 versus the Vikings.
