Just one day after being cut by the Seattle Seahawks, former All-Pro defensive end Dwight Freeney has signed with the Detroit Lions, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The team confirmed the news on their official Twitter account and website.

Freeney played four games for the Seattle Seahawks this season, taking the field mostly as a situation rusher on passing downs. He recorded three sacks during his short tenure with the Hawks and will look to help a Lions pass rush tied for 20th in the NFL in sacks.

The seven-time Pro Bowler has openly discussed his eventual retirement over the last couple of years, so I, as well as other writers, speculated that Freeney had played his final snap. That won't be the case.

While Freeney's best seasons came as a member of the Indianapolis Colts from 2002-2012, he also made stops with the San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, and Seattle.

Freeney likely won't be available for the Lions tomorrow when they host the NFC North leading Minnesota Vikings. At 6-4, Detroit is currently tied for the final wild card spot in the NFC. A win over the Vikings would bring them within a game of Minnesota for the division lead, while a loss would probably mean that Detroit's only possible path to the postseason would be as one of the two NFC wild cards.

Expect Freeney to make his debut for the Lions in Week 13 when they face the Baltimore Ravens. After that, Detroit's final four games come against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, and Green Bay Packers.
