Detroit Lions edge rusher Ziggy Ansah was a notable absentee at the start of the team’s offseason conditioning program as he went to Ghana to take care of some family matters.

However, he’s set to return to the States on Monday. And on Tuesday, he is expected to sign his $17.143 million franchise tag and report for the team’s offseason workouts, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Ansah and the Lions still have until July 16 to come to terms on a long-term deal. While that’s reportedly unlikely to happen, it’s still possible for things to change during their negotiations in the coming months.

Ansah, 28, is a former top-five pick by the Lions in 2015. After having the worst season of his career in 2016, he bounced back in a big way last season as he upped his sack total from two to 12. He also had 44 tackles and a forced fumble in 14 games.

With 44 sacks in his first five years in the league, Ansah is easily the Lions’ most consistent pass rushing threat. That’s why they made it their No. 1 priority to keep him in the fold, at least for one more season.

Given the current uncertainty surrounding his contract situation, the Lions will likely need to prepare themselves for the possibility of life without Ansah. That means targeting potential replacements in the draft. But with Ansah set to sign his franchise tender, new head coach Matt Patricia and the Lions will have at least one more season of the top pass rushers in the entire league.
