Over the NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions bolstered their offensive backfield when they signed two-time Super Bowl champion running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year, $2 million deal.

According to an article written this weekend by Lions beat reporter Michael Rothstein of ESPN, Detroit might end up putting running back Ameer Abdullah on the trading block during the 2018 NFL Draft.

“It would not surprise me if Detroit moved any of the running backs other than LeGarrette Blount. Of those backs, Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick would be the players to watch there for various reasons — particularly if Detroit takes a running back early. Abdullah would probably be easier to move because he’s in the last year of his deal and his role on the team is a little less defined than, say, Blount or Riddick,” Rothstein said.

That would definitely make sense, as Abdullah is currently the No. 3 running back on the depth chart and has never quite panned out with the Lions after being selected late in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

During the 2017 NFL season, Abdullah rushed for an underwhelming 552 yards on 165 carries (3.3 yards per carry) and scored four touchdowns on the ground in 14 games. He also caught 25 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown reception on the year.

What would the Lions be able to get in return for Abdullah if they put him on the trading block? If Detroit instead decides to keep him for the 2018 season and again doesn't live up to expectations, he will surely be shown the door and not offered a new contract from the Lions.
