The Detroit Lions are reportedly close to signing running back Frank Gore to a three-year deal. The 34-year-old is set to come for a visit in Detroit on Thursday.

Gore is a historically great running back, having made five Pro Bowls and rushing for 14,026 yards and 77 touchdowns in his career. Heck, even last season, he rushed for 961 yards for the Indianapolis Colts and their underwhelming offensive line last season in his mid-30s.

Of note: Even if the deal is being reported to be for three years, there's a better chance of Elon Musk landing on Mars within the next month than it is that Gore would make it through his full contract with the Lions.

A former third-round NFL Draft pick out of Miami all the way back in 2005, Gore's longevity in the league is notable for several reasons. With the shelf life of a running back usually being under three years, coupled with Gore suffering a few huge injuries during his college and pro career, his ability to still be a desirable asset for franchises to sign in 2018 is amazing.

The Lions are — at least apparently — looking to add some depth to the running back position. They've already brought in veterans Jonathan Stewart and DeMarco Murray for visits this offseason as the likes of Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick have failed to provide consistent production on the ground.

It is unlikely, despite Gore's solid production in Indy last season, the Lions are hoping he comes in as a workhorse back. However, he could still be able to provide some meaningful snaps as part of a larger running back rotation.
