Sony is predicting that PS5 sales this year could reach a “conservative” amount of 18 million units. This entails that supply issues may no longer be a major problem beginning this fiscal year.

Ever since its launch back in 2020, Sony has been struggling with selling PS5 units globally due to supply issues. Because of this, many PlayStation fanatics are now deprived of owning the next-gen console. In addition to the shortage of supplies, scalpers have also been a major concern for people who want to snag a unit. However, it seems that Sony is confident that all this is going to change starting this year.

Sony recently dropped their investor briefing showing the results of how they did in terms of sales last year. In that same document, they mentioned their projection of PS5 sales beginning April 2022 until March 2023. Sony predicts that they can achieve 18 million units sold by the end of this fiscal year.

Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki stated during an earnings briefing that they are very comfortable hitting that mark. “18 million units is what we feel very comfortable we can get the parts and components during fiscal year 2022.” Totoki even claimed that 18 million is a conservative figure and could possibly sell a bit more than that. However, the CFO acknowledges that Sony still won’t be able to meet demands given the number of supplies they have. “We feel that there is a little bit higher demand than that, so if the question is if we can meet the demand, I think we're still short somewhat.”

Given that supplies still might be able to meet demands, we don’t know different this fiscal year would be. Especially if scalpers will still have the audacity to hoard every unit, the situation might remain the same. However, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be something to look forward to. In any case, this is still good news for PlayStation fanatics. Given that Sony is now able to sell more units, that only indicates that tech supply shortages may no longer be a problem.
