After weeks of speculation, it appears Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne is leaving Italy for the MLS. The Euro 2020 winner has agreed to terms with Toronto FC, who are set to pay him a record-breaking $13 million per season, via Sky Sports Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio.

Insigne is expected to join Toronto in June when his current contract in Naples expires. The striker will ink a five-and-a-half-year deal with the MLS outfit. In the process, he will become the highest-paid player in the league's history, surpassing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was raking in $7.3 million with the LA Galaxy in 2019.

The 30-year-old Lorenzo Insigne has spent the majority of his career with Napoli after coming up through their youth program. Inter Milan was very interested in pursuing the Italian international in the summer when his contract runs out, but he doesn't want to play for any other club in Serie A because Insigne feels it would be disrespectful to Napoli.

For the MLS, this is a tremendous addition. More high-profile names continue to make their way across the pond, with Luis Suarez even being linked to David Beckham's Inter Miami recently. Toronto FC meanwhile is familiar with having Italians after Sebastian Giovinco's decorated stint at the club. It will be interesting to see if Lorenzo Insigne can prove to be worth his money for a side looking to get back to relevance in the Eastern Conference.
