Luka Doncic comparable to Magic Johnson, claims Mark Cuban

Luka Doncic, Magic Johnson, Mark Cuban

Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic’s game has already received tons of comparisons with several all-time greats. But as far as Mavs owner Mark Cuban is concerned, the Slovenian sensation is the second coming of Los Angeles Lakers icon, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. In an appearance on the Danger Show with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the eccentric billionaire revealed what makes Doncic the closest thing to Magic in today’s modern era of basketball.

“He can pass the ball, see from the top, get where he wants from the court. Knows how to pass to guys on time and on target. Clutch player in crunch time. Will take on responsibility against anybody, anytime. Great teammate. Fun Kid. Magic will light things up with a smile, Luka’s the same way for the Mavs. He’s got that charisma that Magic has.”

It’s not hard to agree with Cubes on this one, considering the glaring similarities between the two generational talents. Both Magic and Luka are considered big, pass-first point guards who also possess the ability to score with ease. Johnson electrified the league in the ’80s and was the facilitator behind the legendary Lakers’ Showtime era. The same goes for Donic, who basically brought Dallas back to relevance after the Dirk Nowitzki era officially wrapped up last year.

Stats wise, Donic does have the upper hand on Magic during their respective sophomore seasons in the league. The young Mavs star was in the MVP conversation in 2019-20, racking up sensational numbers of 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists. Magic, on the other hand, notched slightly lower numbers if 21.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.6 assists in 1980-81. However, it is worth noting that Johnson was already an NBA champion in his rookie year, while Doncic failed to lead Dallas past the first round last season.

Still, Luka Doncic will still have plenty of years ahead of him in Dallas to catch up to Magic’s greatness. Mavs fan can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
