The Lakers have a nice young core this year under head coach Luke Walton. They didn't have the season last year they were hoping for and are now looking to have a much improved season.
New head coach Luke Walton most likely has a starting lineup he'd like to see to start the season, but he has said that he is not ready to pencil in any particular starting five. Luol Deng, one of the lone veterans expected to be in the starting lineup, isn't even guaranteed a starting gig.
I asked Luke Walton if I should pencil in Deng as the starter – he said I can, but he hasn't – everyone has to earn their spot in rotation

Brandon Ingram and Luol Deng will be fighting to earn the starting small forward spot to start the season and you'd have to figure that Deng has a bit of a lead at this time. He is the veteran and has the experience to be a great mentor for Ingram.
Still, as Luke Walton notes, it's a battle that will be decided during training camp and both of them will get the chance to earn the spot.
