The Orlando Magic have signed point guard Michael Carter-Williams to a 10-day contract, the team announced Friday.

The Magic were in dire need of depth at the position following Isaiah Briscoe's arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday, as recent trade deadline acquisition Markelle Fultz continues to rehabilitate in Los Angeles. The team applied for an injury hardship exception and was granted it, allowing for the short-term signing of Carter-Williams.

The 6-foot-6, 190-pound guard played in 16 games for the Houston Rockets this season, averaging 4.3 points and 1.3 assists in a limited role that saw him average 9.1 minutes per game. He was traded by the Rockets along with cash considerations to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for a protected 2020 second-round pick and later waived by Chicago.

The Rookie of the Year in 2013, Carter-Williams played 52 games last season for the Charlotte Hornets, who were coached by now-Magic coach Steve Clifford.

Being already familiar with Clifford's system, along with some of the Magic's assistant coaches, bodes well for his quick integration to the team, hoping to be signed for the remainder of the season.

Carter-Williams is expected to wear No. 7 with the Magic and see minutes behind D.J. Augustin and Jerian Grant, while also able to play some off-guard as a lanky defender.
