Thanks in large part to the NBA's continued efforts, basketball has become a game that is beloved around the globe. With no end to this popularity rise in sight, the league continues to broaden its horizons.

The Orlando Magic announced Tuesday that they will play a pair of games at Arena Ciudad de Mexico this season as part of NBA Mexico City Games 2018. The Magic will face the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 13 and Utah Jazz on Dec. 15.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel notes that the DeVos family — owners of the Magic franchise and co-founders of Amway — had a hand in Orlando's decision to play in Mexico City.

“Any time we have the opportunity to travel and represent the league internationally it is very attractive,” Magic CEO Alex Martins told the Orlando Sentinel.

“It helps us to expand our brand in certain cities around the world. It certainly helps in relation to the promotion of our ownership’s interests in Amway, and that’s certainly the case with Mexico City as Mexico is a growing market for the Amway Corporation. So it’s a great brand-building opportunity for the Orlando Magic but also for the Amway Corporation.”

The games that the Magic play in Mexico City will be considered home games, which means the team will only be playing 39 games inside Orlando's Amway Center this season.

“We’re not concerned about it,” Martins told the Orlando Sentinel. “We’re excited about the opportunity. We’re excited about showcasing the Orlando Magic brand again in Mexico City and representing not just the NBA but the city of Orlando internationally.

“As a matter of fact, there’s an opportunity, a chance, that the revenue that we derive from these two games may be greater than what we would have netted at the Amway Center from those two games,” Martins added.

Both of Orlando's games in Mexico City will be broadcast live on ESPN.
