LAS VEGAS – It took the Orlando Magic just two games to say, ‘we've seen enough.' No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero has been shut down for the remainder of the 2022 NBA Summer League after playing just two games in the Vegas tournament.

Banchero was made available to members of the media following the news that he's been shut down.

“They suggested what was best for me and I didn't wanna really push back or nothing,” Banchero said. “I was happy with how I played, they were happy with how I played. We were 2-0. Could've won this one as well. They were comfortable with doing that and I wasn't gonna give them any pushback.”

“Did you want to keep playing?” a reporter asked the Magic rookie.

“Yes,” he responded.

Paolo Banchero's Summer League finished with him averaging 20 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.0 block per game. He did shoot just 40.7 percent from the field and turned the ball over 10 times in two games, but it was a fantastic debut for the rookie who put on back-to-back shows against Jabari Smith and Keegan Murray.

“I was happy with the way I played, but there's a lot I could improve on. In the second game, I had a lot of turnovers. Just getting in better shape. I felt like it was my first two games, so I just wanted to build my wind back up, but I think overall, I did pretty good.”

A lot of the highlights from Banchero's Summer League came in the second matchup against the Kings. The Magic blew an 18-point lead with 5:26 remaining, including allowing Sacramento to score six points in the final six seconds to force overtime.

In Sudden Death overtime, the second overtime period, Paolo Banchero was responsible for a huge blocked dunk attempt that would've lost Orlando the game. He then found Emanuel Terry for the game-winner on the ensuing possession.

Banchero finished that game with a monster line of 23 points, six rebounds, six assists, four steals, and two blocked shots. He did turn the ball over eight times, which he says is a product of him trying new things out in the exhibition league.

“Summer League, I’m using it kind of just to try stuff, you know?” Paolo Banchero said. “Whether it’s offensively or defensively, obviously not to the point where it’s detrimental to the team, but just trying new things. My jumper wasn’t falling, bad turnovers, but just had to figure it out, gut it out. With passes, just getting to the rim, getting to the free throw line. I didn’t shoot well from the field, but I got to the free throw line 15 times, so that’s a positive.”

It was never really announced by the team, but Paolo Banchero did leave the Magic's second game with a noticeable limp. He requested a trainer following his postgame availability, and the trainer was looking at his left ankle.

It's unclear if the ankle injury played a part in the Magic shutting Banchero down, but one can assume Orlando wanted their rookie in no further harm's way after seeing what they needed to see in the first two games.

Overall, it was a successful Summer League for both the Orlando Magic and Paolo Banchero. The No. 1 overall pick will now shift his focus to the 2022-23 regular season.
