LAS VEGAS – The Orlando Magic moved to 2-0 in Summer League play led by Paolo Banchero. Orlando defeated the Sacramento Kings, getting one game closer to a potential berth in the Championship round one week from Sunday.

Banchero finished the game with 23 points, six rebounds, six assists, four steals, two blocks. His second block could not have come at a more perfect time: With 1:15 left in Sudden Death. The play, however, as initially ruled a foul on the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

“I thought I got it clean so when they called a foul, I was upset,” Banchero said after the game.

Orlando Magic Jesse Mermuys immediately threw up the index finger in a swirling motion, indicating he wanted a review. During the timeout, he was seen talking to the officials, likely trying to convince them not to let the game that had fans hyped potentially end on a free throw.

The call was ultimately overturned following a lengthy review, much to the delight of the Summer League crowd that packed the Thomas & Mack Center crowd.

“Obviously, you want the players to decide that game,” explained coach Mermuys. “That's what everyone wants to see. And we want to see how Paolo would respond in crunch time and sure enough, super proud of him.”

Because the Magic gained possession of the ball immediately after the block when the whistle was blown, they retained possession after winning the review.

“They reviewed it and overturned it, so I was happy,” Paolo Banchero said to ClutchPoints postgame. “I definitely think that was the right decision. Definitely wouldn't want to end that great of a game on some free throws. Let the players play it out, so yeah.”

Paolo Banchero was handed the ball to go win the game. He drew a double-team at the top of the key and found Emanuel Terry down low, who finished a tough layup in traffic.

The game was a whirlwind by any standards let alone Summer League. Orlando blew an 18-point fourth-quarter lead with about 5:26 remaining. They allowed the Kings to score six points in the final six seconds of regulation to force overtime, shocking everyone at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Then, with 6.2 seconds remaining in overtime and Orlando up three, the Magic fouled Sacramento's Devin Cannady on a three-point shot. He would go on to make all three free throws, forcing the Sudden Death overtime period.

Paolo Banchero did struggle a bit despite the nice line, shooting just 6-of-15 from the field and turning the ball over eight times. He says he's still working his way through the NBA game.

“Summer League, I'm using it kind of just to try stuff, you know?” Paolo Banchero explained. “Whether it's offensively or defensively, obviously not to the point where it's detrimental to the team, but just trying new things. My jumper wasn't falling, bad turnovers, but just had to figure it out, gut it out. With passes, just getting to the rim, getting to the free throw line. I didn't shoot well from the field, but I got to the free throw line 15 times, so that's a positive.”

The Magic's next game will come against Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night. If his postgame limp was any indication, Banchero did appear to suffer an ankle injury. It remains to be seen whether or not he'll play, but everyone is hoping he'll be healthy enough to take on No. 2 pick Holmgren.
