Man City coach Pep Guardiola admitted we may never see the achievements of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo be replicated. Speaking to reporters before his side's Champions League matchup against Messi and PSG, Guardiola said:

ā€œI don't imagine [it will happen] as what these two guys have done will be almost impossible to imitate. Maybe I will see it but I don't think it's going to happen ā€“ scoring this amount of goals, the amount of titles both had done. It is so difficult. I think it is unique in history to find two players like Cristiano and Messi do what they have done.ā€

Ronaldo and Messi are two legends of the game who have dominated for more than a decade. The two have broken countless records throughout their careers and frequently tasted success on both a personal and team level. In fact, since 2008, the Argentine and Portuguese have a combined 11 Ballons d'Or between them.

Guardiola is no stranger to the genius both players display. The City boss coached Messi at Barcelona in the earlier years of the Messi-Ronaldo rivalry. Consequently, he faced Ronaldo's Real Madrid and witnessed firsthand both players driving each other to be the best.

Now well into their thirties and playing in separate domestic leagues, the two continue to demonstrate why many consider them the greatest. As the 2021 Ballon d'Or awarding approaches, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are once again on the list of nominees. There have certainly been challengers to their dominance recently, but as Pep Guardiola said, we may never see a duopoly between two players of that calibre again.

In the meantime, Guardiola will attempt to stop his former star as his Man City side prepare to face PSG on Wednesday.
