Manchester United confirmed Wednesday that Paul Pogba will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of June:

This will be the second time Pogba leaves Manchester United. He began his senior club career with them over a decade ago after previously joining their youth academy. However, he wasn't there all that long, leaving for Juventus in somewhat controversial fashion in 2012. Legendary Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson even lobbed some criticism at Pogba for how he handled his exit.

Pogba spent five years with Juventus, but then he found his way back to Manchester United in 2016 on a massive transfer fee. The club won the EFL Cup, Community Shield and Europa League in his first season back, and he led them in goals in the 2018-19 season. Unfortunately, they still haven't won the English Premier League since 2013 and never got further than the Champions League Quarterfinals (2018-19) in Pogba's second tenure.

Furthermore, things ended quite poorly for Pogba this season after inconsistency marred his last six years. He faced criticism during a disappointing 2021-22 campaign and even got booed by his own supporters at the end of the season.

With Pogba gone (a return to Juventus could be in the cards), Manchester United are now looking to make a big splash. They have apparently opened talks with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong. The catch is that de Jong wants to stay with Barcelona, though Barca's financial issues have United pushing to make a deal:

De Jong joined Barcelona in 2019 after four years with Ajax. Financial problems helped push Lionel Messi out Barcelona's door, so perhaps that will be the same thing that happens with de Jong. Manchester United are poised to strike and will try to make this happen.
