Newly appointed Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has assessed the similarities and differences he has with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Some may not know but just like Jurgen Klopp, Manchester United‘s interim manager Ralf Rangnick is also one of the best coaches from Germany.

The pair has known each other since 1997 and both of them have “bonded over a futuristic vision.” Acknowledging his similarities with Klopp, Rangnick admitted that he is “not that far” from his compatriot as far as being a tactician goes.

“Mine [my tactics] is definitely not a slow waltz,” Rangnick said via The Guardian. “I am not that far apart from Jürgen [Klopp] in terms of our ideas. That’s no secret.”

In particular, Rangnick and Klopp share the same recognition– the founding fathers ofthe gegenpressing playing style.

Gegenpressing is an in-game approach devised by Klopp during his time with German club Borussia Dortmund. Basically, when done perfectly, the said style allows other players to recover the ball at the quickest possible time to attack after someone else loss it.

“The best moment to win the ball is immediately after your team just lost it,” Klopp explained via The Economic Times. “The opponent is still looking for orientation where to pass the ball. He will have taken his eyes off the game to make his tackle or interception and he will have expended energy. Both make him vulnerable.’ Which makes gegenpressa counter-counter-attacking scheme.”

It is yet to be known whether Rangnick will also impose the gegenpressing playing style in Manchester United.
