Manchester United are struggling to stay in the race for the Champions League next season, falling to seventh place in the Premier League Table with 32 points from their first 20 matches. After parting ways with Ole Gunnar Solksjaer earlier this year, interim manager Ralf Rangnick has taken over the side, and is reportedly keen on making some significant changes. According to 90min, Rangnick met with Manchester United brass earlier this month and had some pretty damning admissions on the state of the Red Devils' defense.

Per 90min, in his meeting with his superiors, Rangnick expressed his desire to revamp the Manchester United backline. Rangnick reportedly cast doubts over the ability of Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Harry Maguire, deeming them to be “not good enough” to play for United. Rangnick is reportedly seeking replacements for the defensive trio after what has been a dismal first half of the Premier League campaign.

The trio have struggled to perform on the pitch this season, and it seems Rangnick's patience with them is wearing thin. Maguire signed with United back in 2019 and is the world's most expensive defender, with United having forked over $110 million (€80 million) to bring him to town from Leicester City. Wan-Bissaka was acquired in a €50 million deal with Crystal Palace, but has also failed to impress. Shaw, on the other hand, was also a world-record signing by Manchester United, who paid €30 million to Southampton in exchange for the left-back in 2014, the highest fee ever paid for a teenager at that time.

It remains to be seen whether any of the aforementioned trio are offloaded during the January transfer window, but if anything is clear, it's that United will be taking a significant financial loss when they are finally sold.
