The Toronto Maple Leafs could be in pursuit of a new guy to man the net, beginning next season. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic is reporting that the Maple Leafs are among those rumored to have developed an interest in goalie Philipp Grubauer, who is now an unrestricted free agent following his three-season stint in Colorado Avalanche uniform.

On Philipp Grubauer, hearing that the Leafs have real interest if Colorado can't re-sign the UFA goalie. Toronto has other goalie targets as well, but that would be a high-end one, the Vezina Trophy finalist. Leafs would have to move cap space though.

The Maple Leafs currently still have Jack Campbell, but he is only under team control for one more season. Plus, with the manner with which Toronto concluded the last season, the team is pressured to make changes — any changes — to make it appear that they are trying to prevent yet another tremendously disappointing campaign. The Maple Leafs got knocked out of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens after wasting a 3-1 series lead, though Campbell played well in that matchup.

With Colorado re-signing captain Gabriel Landeskog to a huge deal, the Avs might not have enough to get Grubauer back. The team will also have to think about an extension for Nathan McKinnon. Grubauer’s last contract was for three years and was worth $10 million with an AAV of $3.33 million.
