Boston Celtics combo guard Marcus Smart left Wednesday's preseason game against the New York Knicks with 48 seconds left in the second quarter with a left ankle sprain.

The injury occurred when Smart appeared to step in shooting guard Justin Holiday‘s foot. After staying on the floor for roughly a minute, Smart popped up to his feet with the help of teammates Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder, limping to the sideline to avoid putting weight on his left foot.

Minutes after the injury, the Celtics announced Smart wouldn't return to the game as his team took a 59-50 deficit into halftime.

The Celtics had sat four of his starters against the Knicks and were looking to give Smart and others plenty of run. He averaged 9.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals last season.
