The Seattle Mariners and New York Mets will face each other for the first time since their infamous 2018 trade. The trade gave the Mariners a top prospect, outfielder Jarred Kelenic, along with a few other players. The Mets received relief pitcher Edwin Diaz and second baseman Robinson Cano.

In the years that have followed, it has always been tough to say who won the deal. While Kelenic's potential remains untapped for the Mariners, Cano didn't do much in New York and was recently cut from the team. Diaz remaining a very good closing pitcher has swung the balance in favor of the Mets, but not by a massive margin. Kelenic could change that if he makes a big leap, though it doesn't seem like one is coming.

The Mariners gave some ammunition to those who think the trade flopped. Just ahead of the series opener on Friday night, they sent Kelenic down to the minor leagues.

In 30 games this season, Kelenic has an OPS of .509 with 12 hits and struck out nearly four times as much as he walked. The 22-year-old has been overmatched so far in the big leagues, though he still remains a raw talent for the Mariners.

The Mariners, at 14-18, had a massive offseason but have not yet shown that it has paid off. The Mets, meanwhile, have been one of baseball's best teams so far this season.
