It took a while, but Seattle Mariners first baseman Ty France has finally earned an All-Star Game nod for the first time in his career.

MLB announced on Sunday that France was named to the 2022 MLB All-Star Game after Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was ruled out for the contest due to injury. Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton will replace the three-time American League MVP Award winner in the AL starting lineup.

Trout missed the Angels’ final four games of their first half schedule due to back spasms. He was initially listed on Angels manager Phil Nevin’s starting lineup for the home series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he ended up being a late scratch due to his nagging injury.

Trout has earned 10 All-Star Game nods over his career, but this will be the third time that he will be unable to play in the Midsummer Classic because of an injury. A sprained thumb injury ruled him out for the 2017 MLB All-Star Game, while his season-ending calf ailment forced him to miss the 2021 edition of the game.

France was a finalist to Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to be the starter for the American League at the position. He garnered 1,279,315 total votes after Phase 1, and in the end, Guerrero was named the starting first baseman for the AL.

Overall, France entered the Mariners’ road series finale against the Texas Rangers ranking in the top three among qualified AL first basemen in multiple stats, including in OBP (.376).

France joins rookie Julio Rodriguez as the Mariners’ representatives for this year’s All-Star Game.
