In what could be one of the weirdest video game news pieces this week, the cast for the upcoming Mario Movie has just been revealed. Interrupting the flow of the September Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto announced details about the movie, which is titled Super Mario Bros.: The Movie.

Mario Movie Release Date: December 21, 2022

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Super Mario Bros.: The Movie will premiere on December 21, 2022, in the US. The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures. The Mario Movie will also release in the same time window everywhere else. However, Miyamoto only gave “Holiday 2022” as the release of the film abroad, not specifying the exact details of Mario Movie‘s release date overseas.

Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Nintendo has been working with Illumination Entertainment (Sing, Ice AgeDespicable Me) to bring about a full-length animated film for Super Mario. Dubbed Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, the Mario Movie has some big names providing their voices for the iconic Nintendo characters.

Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy headline the billing, lending their voices to Mario and Princess Peach, respectively. A bit out of character, Miyamoto shares that Mario will be talking a lot in the movie. He also shares that Princess Peach will “very spirited” in this movie, a far cry from the role of Beth Harmon, the role Anya Taylor-Joy played in The Queen's Gambit, one of her most recent and most popular performances.

Meanwhile, Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy are far from the only celebrities in this star-studded cast. Charlie Day will play Mario's brother, Luigi. Acting legend Jack Black will lend his voice to Mario's rival Bowser. Comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen will be playing supporting roles as Toad and Donkey Kong. Yes, even though this is a Mario Movie, Donkey Kong will be around as well. Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario in various other media, will be having a “special participation” in the movie, with surprise cameo appearances being one of them. Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Sebastian Maniscalco will also play supporting roles in the movie.
