Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was never worried about the possibility of losing Dirk Nowitzki in free agency.

At one point, when asked about the idea of Dirk walking, he told reporters in a confident manner that Nowitzki could do whatever he wanted to do.

Nowitzki opted out of the final year of his contract to become a free agent, like many other players this offseason. One team that was said to be interested in his services was the Golden State Warriors, but Nowitzki never really considered leaving.

Cuban spoke with the Boston Globe about Nowitzki's free agency.

Dirk wasn't going anywhere. Dirk and Dallas, Dallas and Dirk, they're synonymous. I understand and respect why D-Wade did what he did but there was never any doubt (about Nowitzki staying in Dallas), Dirk gets what Dirk wants.

At 38, Nowitzki has re-signed with Dallas on his last long-term deal before he retires, and Cuban is not done building an exciting young group around him.

We've put together a nice little squad, I'm excited about it. We've got a good starting five and got a good group of young guys that I think are going to be able to contribute and will get better over time. It's exciting. I'm really looking forward to it. We've got some good kids.

Cuban, after acquiring Harrison Barnes via free agency, and Andrew Bogut via trade, is optimistic about how the incoming players will mesh together.

Harrison will get a chance to expand his game, and (Wesley Matthews) will be fully healthy. Deron Williams, Harrison, Dirk, Andrew, that's not a bad starting five, and we've got some of our guys coming back. So we'll be alright.
