Marvel’s Captain Carter will be a staple in the future seasons of What if…?
Marvel’s What if…? producer Brad Winderbaum has confirmed that Hayley Atwell will be returning to voice Captain Carter in the series’ second season and beyond. Atwell first joined the MCU in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Agent Peggy Carter, a key member of S.H.I.E.L.D’s predecessor the Strategic Scientific Reserve, and an eventual love interest for Steve Rogers. She also appeared in other Captain America and Avengers films. Atwell also headlined her own Marvel One-Shot short film, which eventually led to the creation of Marvel’s Agent Carter.
In a recent virtual press conference, Comicbook.com reports that Winderbaum has suggested that Atwell’s Captain Carter was the one character “that bubbled up and became more important” to the series as it moves into its second season.
“We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get AC [Bradley’s] scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important. Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter.”
“And we realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure. Obviously, we’re telling a story on a giant multiversal canvas so you never really know who’s going to pop up where and when. It’s very much an anthology, but there’s always opportunity for fun connections to be made.”
Fans of the MCU have been waiting to see more of Atwell’s Peggy Carter. Thankfully we’ll be seeing plenty of her when Marvel’s What if…? arrive on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.
