The Dallas Mavericks are nearing a deal with small forward Wes Iwundu, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Iwundu played for the Orlando Magic in 2019-20. He was selected with the 33rd overall pick in the 2017 draft out of Kansas State and averaged 3.7 points as a rookie.

In 2019-20, he put up 5.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 52 regular-season games.

Wes Iwundu has career NBA averages of 4.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 31.9 percent from beyond the arc and 79.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Mavs lost to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the 2020 playoffs in six games. All-Star big man Kristaps Porzingis won't be ready for the start of the 2020-21 season after undergoing knee surgery for the second time in his career.

Dallas traded sharpshooter Seth Curry to the Philadelphia 76ers for combo guard Josh Richardson. The team also re-signed Trey Burke after he played well for the team in the NBA bubble at Walt Disney World.

The Mavs have a bright future with Luka Doncic and Porzingis leading the way, with the former already a certified superstar in the NBA. In 2019-20, Doncic averaged 28.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from beyond the arc and 75.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Dallas missed out on talented swingman Danilo Gallinari in free agency, as he joined the Atlanta Hawks to play with Trae Young.
