While Dirk Nowitzki has not formally made any announcements, it is widely expected that the Dallas Mavericks legend will retire from the game of basketball at the end of the season.

Not surprisingly, the Mavericks may have special plans for Nowitzki.

According to Shama Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Dallas is planning a “unique position” for Nowitzki once he does decide to call it quits, whenever that may be.

Nowitzki has said that he does want to be a part of the Mavs organization after his playing career, so this certainly would satisfy all parties involved.

The 40-year-old has played in 38 games this season, averaging 6.0 points and 2.4 rebounds over 13.8 minutes per game while shooting 35.1 percent from the floor and 30.7 percent from 3-point range.

Nowitzki was originally selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the ninth overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to Dallas.

Since then, Nowitzki has been one of the top players in the league and has cemented himself as one of the best power forwards to ever play the game, making 13 All-Star appearances and earning an honorary All-Star selection this season in addition to that total.

Of course, the pinnacle of Nowitzki's career came in 2011, when he led the Mavs to an upset victory over the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. The finals win capped a legendary playoff performance for Dirk.

Dirk Nowitzki owns career averages of 20.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while making 47.1 percent of his field goal attempts, 38.1 percent of his long-distance tries and 87.9 percent of his free throws.
