The Dallas Mavericks will retire Dirk Nowitzki's number some time early next season. Owner Mark Cuban stated as such on Monday during an appearance on The Ben & Skin Show.

Last month, Cuban mentioned that he had been talking with Nowitzki about potentially retiring his #41 before the end of this season. But also said that a ceremony at the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign was a possibility: “The challenge is just getting it all done just because it’s not a lot of home games left. It’s only like (19) home games left, so that’s the hard part…So we’re discussing it now whether it’ll be now or one of the first couple of games next year.”

Cuban also revealed plans for a statue for the Mavs legend. He said the unveiling of the model could tie in with the jersey retirement ceremony if it indeed takes place early next season.

Nowitzki retired after the 2018-19 season, his 21st season in Dallas. He finished his stellar career with 14-time All-Star appearances, 31,560 points (sixth all-time) and is the franchise record holder in nearly every major statistical category. Of course, he led the Mavericks to their lone NBA championship in 2011, defeating the Miami Heat in six games and earning Finals MVP honors.

Cuban surely hopes Luka Doncic will eventually amass a resume as prolific as Dirk's and have his own statue and #77 hanging from the rafters some day.
