Chinanu Onuaku’s career as a Dallas Maverick is not going to last long. In fact, he’s not even going to be part of the Mavs’ opening day roster next season.

Just hours after it was reported that Onuaku was traded by the Houston Rockets to Dallas along with a future draft pick for cash and the rights to Maarty Leunen, the former Louisville Cardinals big man is expected to be waived by the Mavs in order to give way to the signing of veteran guard Devin Harris, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

Trading Onuaku to the Mavs gave Houston some form of cap relief in the form of a $1.54 million trade exception. It also opens the door to officially sign Carmelo Anthony.

As for Dallas, their priority is not to keep Onuaku but to reunite with an old reliable in the form of Devin Harris, who last played for the Denver Nuggets.

Harris actually started last season on the Mavs' roster before he was traded to the Nuggets back in February in a three-team deal that also involved the New York Knicks.

In 71 total games last season, Harris averaged 8.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.

Back in Dallas, Harris is not expected to have a big role. Instead, he’ll act as end-of-the-bench insurance and mentor for the team’s young backcourt tandem of Dennis Smith Jr. and Luka Doncic.
