Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. has had positive communication with Mavs team officials in the past several days, according to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Atheltic.

The Mavs, internally, are maintaining that Dennis Smith Jr. has been a positive teammate and competitor. The explosive point guard has reportedly not gone to management and requested a trade either.

Dennis Smith Jr. has missed the previous four games due to a back injury. The 21-year-old has also been dealing with an illness and a lingering right wrist injury.

In 28 games this season for the Mavs, Dennis Smith Jr. is averaging 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 68.1 percent from the free-throw line.

Smith Jr. is fourth on the Mavs in points per game and third in assists.

A few days ago, it appeared that Dallas was going to trade Dennis Smith Jr. While that is still in play, it looks like the two sides could be trying to resolve some issues and get Smith Jr. back with the team in good spirits.

Mavs rookie swingman Luka Doncic has taken over the primary ball-handling responsibilities for Dallas, which has forced Dennis Smith Jr. to play the two-guard position. Playing more off-the-ball has reportedly not sat well with Smith Jr.

This situation is one to monitor as the trade deadline approaches.
