For NBA rookies, their first season as pros is a chance for them to learn about the demands of a campaign's grind, and competing against some of the best players in the world. That is exactly what Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. is currently going through, and had a lot of realizations after playing against Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday.

The 19-year-old found out first hand how good the reigning MVP really is and that he receives a lot of calls in his favor. However, he also gave him a lot of credit for playing the way he does, and considers it a good experience.

“I didn’t know he got that many calls.” Smith said. “But he’s a really good player.”

While Smith made a good account of himself with a solid game, Westbrook outplayed him by finishing with 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. More importantly, the Thunder beat the Mavs, 112-99, and won their second consecutive game.

The former NC State star on the other hand recorded 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot, but his efforts were not enough to prevent the Mavericks to fall to 2-12 for the season. They may have lost on the night, but the experience will only make Smith bring out the best in him, and should help him play against the likes of Westbrook and other stars better in the future.
