As of this writing, Dirk Nowitzki just needs 233 points to move ahead of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain for the fifth spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Once he gets there, however, it may not take too much of a time before he slides down back to the sixth spot with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James’s figure looming large on his rearview mirror. Nowitzki also did not sound as though he is confident that he will break into the top five of the list first before the Cavs’ forward does, per Tim McMahon of ESPN.

Dirk thinks he’ll be passed by LeBron before he passes Wilt on the all-time scoring list. “I’ll go right back to six. We already have all the merchandise and everything.”

Dirk Nowitzki is currently seventh all-time in points with 31,187 markers, just 232 points away from passing Wilt. With only one game left in the regular season for the Mavs, Dirk is projected to surpass Chamberlain early in the 2018-19 campaign. LeBron James, on the other hand, needs just 160 points to pass by Nowitzki, which will most certainly happen next season.

LeBron passing Dirk and Wilt is a foregone conclusion, as he has more gas left in his tank than the Mavs’ star big man. But it would be nice to see the German knockdown shooter get to the top five of the list even if his stay there would just be an ephemeral one.

Dirk could add more to his career scoring totals this Tuesday, as the Mavericks take on the Phoenix Suns at home.
