If the Dallas Mavericks managed to sign DeAndre Jordan this summer, expect Dirk Nowitzki to welcome the big man with open arms – even if Jordan is the main reason why the future Hall of Famer has taken a pay cut, according to Eddie Sefko of Dallasnews.com.

“Sources have said Dirk Nowitzki is on board with the DeAndre Jordan move. Him giving up maybe only $600K is not a problem.”

The Mavericks are zeroing in on acquitting Jordan, after the center reportedly opted out of the final year of his contract, worth $24.1 million, with the L.A. Clippers. In an earlier report, the Mavs decided not to exercise their option on Nowitzki for the 2018-19 season to make $5 million more salary cap space, interpreted by many as a maneuver made in anticipation of Jordan’s eventual arrival to the team’s fold.

That said, Dirk Nowitzki is not expected to head somewhere else. Instead, he’s anticipated to sign a new deal worth around $4.4 million or $600,000 cheaper than what he could’ve made if the Mavs didn’t cancel his initial salary for next season.

After wallowing in mediocrity last season in which they finished with a 24-58 record, the Mavericks are poised to have a bounce-back campaign, especially if Jordan will get signed by Dallas.

The Mavs have a promising backcourt tandem with Luka Doncic and Dennis Smith Jr. in tow and some decent pieces in the likes of Harrison Barnes and J.J. Barea. Adding Jordan to the squad could put the team back on the radar.
