Whereas plenty of teams in the NBA have been preparing for the roller coaster affair that will be the 2019 free agency period, the Dallas Mavericks made their big play in February.

Dallas made one of the biggest trades of the season when they acquired former New York Knicks superstar Kristaps Porzingis, who was still recovering from an ACL injury. Although Porzingis was heading towards restricted free agency, the Mavericks are reportedly signing him to a five-year, $158 million deal.

But Porzingis is not the only piece that the team is keen on locking up for the near future. Marc Stein of The New York Times is reporting that Dallas plans to offer a three-year, $33 million extension to big man Dwight Powell as soon as free agency officially opens on Sunday evening:

Powell has made strides in each of his last two seasons with the Mavericks. Despite playing behind DeAndre Jordan for the majority of the season, Powell pieced together a very respectable per-36 line of 17.7 points and 8.9 rebounds on nearly 60 percent shooting from the field. He also registered an impressive 20.4 Player Efficiency Rating (PER) and 7.5 win shares, according to Basketball-Reference.

With Jordan gone from the lineup and Porzingis stretching the floor, Powell will be the man in the middle. He has tremendous athleticism for his size, and he has begun to experiment with stepping out and taking more shots from the perimeter.

Should Powell show an increasing ability to knock down open jumpers, the Mavericks' frontcourt could prove to be one of the most versatile and deadly in the league.
