Dallas Mavericks forward Dwight Powell will stay with his current team after exercising his player option for the 2019-20 NBA season.

According to Marc Stein of the New York Post, Powell has already informed the Mavericks of his decision to opt into the final year of his contract. And in fact, the 27-year-old power forward will likely remain in Dallas beyond next season, as the report also indicated that the Mavericks want to sign him to a contract extension in July.

Powell, who has spent almost his entire five-year career in Dallas after playing only four games with the Boston Celtics during his rookie year, is coming off a strong season. The former Stanford standout averaged a career-high 10.6 points on 59.7 percent shooting on top of 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

His decision to opt in did not come as a surprise to many, though, as he has been very vocal about his intention to remain in Dallas. Earlier this month, Powell debunked a report about his alleged plan to opt out, and insisted that he wants to stay in Dallas.

“There's no place I would rather be than Dallas,” Powell said via Brad Townsend of Sportsday. ” I think I have done everything to show that I love it here. This team gave me my shot. They've treated me extremely well.”

Powell is expected to play a significant role in their retooled roster next season. Barring any setback, the Mavericks are set to parade their new duo of Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Knicks last season.
