Dirk Nowitzki called it a career this past season and officially retired from the NBA. With that said, Dirk will now move on to different ventures.

FIBA recently published a press release and named the Dallas Mavericks legend its Chair of Players Commission, as well as a member of the FIBA Central Board.

Per FIBA's official press release:

Former German national team and NBA superstar Dirk Nowitzki has been appointed as Chair of the Players Commission on Saturday at the first FIBA Central Board meeting for the new term. With this appointment, he also becomes a member of the 25-member FIBA Central Board.

In response to his appointment, Nowitzki said that he feels honored to get the opportunity and is looking forward to represent the players in FIBA.

Nowitzki had a storied basketball career, not just in the NBA, but in international basketball, as well, playing for Germany. Nowitzki never won a gold medal for his home country. He did, however, lead them to a bronze medal finish in the 2002 World Cup, where he also won MVP of the entire tournament.

Nevertheless, despite a relatively lackluster international career, Nowitzki is still regarded as arguably the greatest European to ever step foot on an NBA court. The German forward opened the door for a lot of players coming from Europe, showing that their style of play can translate into the best league in the world.

With his basketball career over, Nowitzki might still continue being a global ambassador for the sport, as its popularity all over the world is expanding at a rapid rate. In terms of an NBA gig, perhaps a front office role with the Mavs might be in the works sometime in the future.
