The Dallas Mavericks front office has been keeping busy in the offseason as they look to bolster their team for the upcoming campaign. Luka Doncic could sure use some help, particularly in the backcourt, and at this point, the Mavs could be turning their attention to Dennis Smith Jr.

In a recent interview with DallasBasketball.com, Smith himself revealed that he's “definitely interested” in re-joining the Mavs this summer. Smith is currently out of contract and has become an unrestricted free agent. There hasn't been too much interest in the 23-year-old, but the possibility of returning to Dallas is something that Smith himself is clearly open to.

The Mavs drafted Smith ninth overall in the 2017 draft, and the former NC State standout had quite a memorable debut season. Smith made All-Rookie honors for the 2017-18 season after averaging 15.2 points and 5.2 assists per game.

Dallas sent Smith to the New York Knicks the following season as part of the blockbuster deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Mavs. After two years in The Big Apple, the Knicks traded Smith to the Pistons in February of this year and this was where he played the remainder of the season.

It is worth noting that Smith is good friends with Luka Doncic. Their time together in Dallas may have been short-lived (Smith was traded away during Doncic's rookie year), but it seems that these two have formed quite a bond off the court:

A Smith-Doncic pairing could emerge as a real possibility for next season. Injuries have gotten in the way of what was a very promising career for DSJ, but at just 23, it is clear that this young man still has a lot of basketball ahead of him. For his part, Smith is hoping that this is going to be in Dallas.
