Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis has been plagued with injuries over the past few years. There's no denying that he's a great talent, but to some extent, injuries have gotten in the way of his development.

A former team doctor for the Mavs recently opened up about Porzingis' situation. According to Dr. Souryal, while there is some concern about the big man's knee injuries, he also believes that the 7-foot-3 power forward is already in a position to move forward without any setbacks from the same.

“Anytime you have a star player with multiple injuries, especially to both knees, it’s a little troubling,” Souryal said, via the Dallas News. “But he seems to have come back from his ACL stronger than ever, so that injury’s behind us now. Each one of these injuries should be taken on its own merit.”

Souryal also discussed how this situation is not unique to Porzingis. He explained why he believes injuries have become more rampant — particularly with big men — in today's NBA.

“We are noticing more injuries in the bigs than we have before, but it’s not so much because there are more injuries,” Souryal said. “It’s because the position has evolved and the player playing in that position has evolved.

“You’re seeing many, many more bigs than you did decades ago, and they’re far more athletic than they were decades ago. Two plus two equals four, so you’re seeing more bigs, seeing more athleticism, and therefore you’re seeing more of the common basketball injuries.”

The good doctor makes for an excellent point here. It's also worth noting that his argument sheds some light on how Porzingis is not as injury-prone as most see him to be. The 25-year-old has a bright future ahead of him, and according to Souryal, Porzingis is just as susceptible to injury as any other player in the league.
