The Dallas Mavericks struck gold with Luka Doncic. Dallas traded Trae Young and a future first-round pick in order to attain the Slovenian sensation. Mavs general manager Donnie Nelson believed even a year ago that Doncic was the best player in the entire 2018 draft. Rob Mahoney of Sports Illustrated writes:

A year before Dončić became a Maverick, Nelson told head coach Rick Carlisle that he considered the young Slovene to be the best player in the draft. “Donnie felt he was a completely unique style of international player, someone that you really couldn’t compare to any one guy,” Carlisle says. “I’ve found that to be true.”

Luka Doncic is tearing up the league in his rookie season. He's the early-season favorite to win Rookie of the Year with per game averages of 19.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. First overall pick Deandre Ayton is having a strong season in his own right, but Doncic is the clear favorite right now.

Nelson knew the potential of Doncic, and it must have felt like Christmas morning for Dallas when it landed the 19-year-old. Doncic's unique ability to impact the game in so many ways makes him impossible to defend. He can score in bunches, but he's also a gifted passer with incredible vision.

Nelson's instincts were right about the Slovenian swingman. Luka Doncic looks like he's the best player in a deep and talented draft class. He faced the usual questions that surround international prospects, but so far he's answering all those questions.
