Harrison Barnes took the Washington Wizards by surprise, saving his best outing of the season for Tuesday night, as the Dallas Mavericks rode comfortably to their second win of the season 113-99.

The second-year Maverick was surprised at the way coach Scott Brooks had designed to play him, allowing him to go one-on-one against some of his best defenders — a strategy that proved futile as Barnes dropped a season-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field.

“I guess they didn’t think I was a good iso-scorer. I had to make them pay,” Barnes said after the game, according to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post.

Barnes led the Mavs in scoring last season after coming from a loaded Golden State Warriors team upon the arrival of Kevin Durant. His 18.4 points per game mark this season is right in line with the 19.2 points that he averaged during his first season with the team.

The North Carolina product got some help from rookie Dennis Smith Jr. — who also put out a career-high 22 points in the outing.

The Wizards have struggled after getting off to a 3-0 start to the season, now 5-5 after losing five of their last seven games — four of them to Western Conference teams.
