Here’s another injury news out of the Dallas Mavericks’ camp. According to Bobby Karalla of Mavs.com, Mavericks point guard J.J. Barea will not play anymore this season in order to avoid further aggravation of an oblique injury.

Barea saw action Wednesday's 105-100 road loss to the Orlando Magic but played in only 10 minutes after leaving the contest with a left oblique strain, which was noted earlier by Eddie Sefko of Dallasnews.com.

The Mavs are not going to sweat this development since they don’t have anything left to play for with them missing the boat to the postseason a long time ago. As for Barea, it makes sense for him to just rest instead of exposing himself to further physical danger on the court by playing in meaningless games. Next season would be the contract year for J.J. Barea, who signed a four-year deal with the Mavs back in 2015.

If Barea would indeed not play another game this season, he would finish the 2017-18 campaign with career highs of 11.7 points and 6.3 assists. Barea went undrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft but later found a home in Dallas, where he played his first five seasons in the pro league, even winning a title with the team in 2011. Barea joined the Minnesota Timberwolves after that title season with Dallas then came back to the Mavericks in 2014.

With Barea out, Dallas will look for Yogi Farrell and Aaron Harrison to handle the bulk of the backcourt load. Dennis Smith Jr. did not play in the Magic game and there’s a good chance he’ll be ruled out for the rest of the season as well. Other Mavs who are currently on the shelf are Harrison Barnes, Dwight Powell, and Dirk Nowitzki.
