Jason Kidd knows a thing or two about winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks. This is exactly what the newly-installed Mavs coach wants to deliver for his beloved franchise, and it is clear that Kidd already has his sights set on an NBA title as early as now.

In a recent interview, however, Kidd revealed how he believes that it's going to take much more than just Luka Doncic for the Mavs' championship dream to become a reality. Kidd has no doubt that Doncic is one of the best players in the game today, but the 48-year-old coach is also adamant that the one thing that will take the Mavs to the next level is their defense:

“I don’t think it’s going to change in a sense that we’re not going to take the ball out of Luka’s hand,” Kidd said, via Dwain Price of mavs.com. “He’s too good. We’ve added pieces to compliment him, but also (pieces that) compliment each other.

“But the biggest thing is the defensive side of the ball. We’ve got to pay a little bit more attention to detail. Understand we all have one goal, and that’s to win a championship. And we’ve got to get stops. The last time we won a championship here, we did get stops.”

As a player, Kidd was part of the Mavs' historic title run in 2011. He played alongside a legend in Dirk Nowitzki, who himself is considered as one of the most gifted scorers in the history of the NBA. Kidd made it clear, however, that their championship one decade ago wasn't all about the team's firepower:

“That wasn’t just our offense that won us the championship,” Kidd said. “It was our defense.”

Jason Kidd is hoping to establish his own brand of defense with this current Mavs squad and if all goes according to plan, Luka Doncic and Co. might just emerge as one of the biggest surprise packages in the coming season.
